Job Role Summary

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists hospital pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medications for hospitalized patients. Responsibilities include filling and delivering patient medications, maintaining inventory, and preparing various medications, including sterile IV admixtures, prior to pharmacist final check.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Focus on safety in all duties, evaluating compliance with medication safety procedures, suggesting improvements, documenting errors, and promoting a safety-first environment.
  • Utilize information systems like Epic, OCRA, and WorkflowRx; understand departmental workflows; improve quality and efficiency; triage phone calls; refer clinical questions to pharmacists; resolve automated dispensing cabinet issues; complete tasks diligently.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance: manage controlled substances, perform ward inspections, maintain logs, check ADC outdates, prepare for regulatory audits, and uphold hospital policies.
  • Maintain efficient workflow by adapting to volume changes, utilizing resources wisely, and managing time effectively.
  • Keep work area clean, professional, and organized.
  • Work with urgency to assist customers, resolve crises professionally, and promote teamwork.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide patient-centered care and proactively address service needs.
  • Foster positive staff morale and maintain good relationships with team members and management.
  • Stay informed on departmental updates through meetings, minutes, and emails.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent; pass pre-employment math test.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Bureau as a Pharmacy Technician or Technician-in-Training.
  • Complete Eskenazi Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program within 122 days of probation.
  • CPhT certification preferred.
  • Participate in ongoing continuing education to meet licensure and certification standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of medication classes, pharmaceutical terminology, abbreviations, symbols, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and pharmaceutical instruments; understanding of metric system and calculations.
