Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Trainee to support medication orders and assist in pharmacy operations. The role includes learning sterile and non-sterile compounding, ensuring compliance with USP 795/797, and working under the guidance of a Registered Pharmacist or licensed technician.

Applicants must be currently in high school or hold a GED, and must register with the State of Iowa as a pharmacy technician on hire.

MercyOne North Iowa is a clinical training site for approximately 500 students from 127 different colleges enrolled in programs for medical laboratory, nursing, paramedic, rehabilitation, medical assistants, pastoral services, physicians and many other medical fields.

Employment Type: Part time. Shift: Rotating.

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will:

• 1. Learn how to prepare medication orders, including both sterile and non-sterile compounds. processing physician medication orders to ensure medications are promptly, accurately, and safely delivered.
• 2. Ensure all work meets regulatory compliance standards as related to the Pharmacy, Pharmacy Automation, Billing, and Inventory, USP 795 / 797.

Schedule: PRN; shifts and hours may vary.

General Requirements:

• Complete ASHP didactic learning modules as assigned.
• Achieve a passing score on all quizzes and test related to ASHP didactic learning.
• Complete all experiential learning activities as assigned.
• Provides customer service to medical professionals.
• Follows all policies and procedures to allow for effective and efficient patient care.
• Actively participate in department daily huddles.

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist or Licensed Pharmacy Technician:

• a) Prepares, packages, and distributes medication orders per physician/pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
• b) Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
• c) Contributes to effective and quality operation of the department.
• d) Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation; files documentation; answers telephone and pneumatic tube; and handles cash transactions.
• e) Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education:

• Currently in High School, High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Registration with the State of Iowa as a pharmacy technician (or technician trainee if awaiting certification) upon hire and prior to starting position within the pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician Certification:

• National certification must be acquired and maintained from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or the National Health career Association prior to the expiration date of a Pharmacy Technician in Training registration. (can be obtained at any point after starting work and prior to expiration date of technician trainee registration)
