Job summary

AAPC is seeking a part-time remote Inpatient Medical Coding Specialist to abstract clinical information from health records and assign accurate ICD codes for inpatient psychiatric and PCS coding. The role emphasizes compliance with coding guidelines and standards.

Responsibilities include selecting principal and secondary diagnoses, ICD-10-PCS coding, and participating in team meetings to keep skills current. A formal coding program completion and relevant CCS/RHIT/RHIA credentials are preferred.

Qualifications

• Formal training in medical coding is required.
• CCS, RHIT, or RHIA credentials are preferred.
• Three years of coding experience with ICD coding knowledge.
• Strong understanding of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology.

To support a growing team, the part-time remote Inpatient Medical Coding Specialist will abstract clinical information from health records and assign accurate ICD codes for inpatient psychiatric and PCS coding, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and standards.

Key responsibilities

• Abstracts relevant clinical information from health records and assigns principal and secondary diagnoses based on coding guidelines
• Assigns correct ICD-10-PCS codes and ensures adherence to coding compliance and quality standards
• Participates in team meetings and educational conferences to enhance coding skills and maintain current practices

Required qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent, with completion of a formal coding program
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred
• Minimum of three years of coding work experience with a strong understanding of ICD coding systems
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
• Intermediate computer skills and a commitment to confidentiality and compliance
