Job summary

Allegheny Health Network seeks an experienced medical coder to assign ICD codes for diagnoses and procedures, and to abstract data from medical records for statistical reporting.

The role emphasizes accurate coding, data entry, and adherence to ICD guidelines, with responsibilities including reducing unbilled days and supporting cash flow. A CCS or CIC certification is required, with a preferred AHIMA HIM degree.

Qualifications

• High School / GED required.
• 1 year hospital coding experience.
• Completed coding courses in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
• CCS or CIC certification required.
• Familiarity with medical terminology.
• Strong data entry skills.
• Understanding of computer applications.
• Ability to work with health care team.
• Preferred: Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and interprets medical information to assign ICD codes.
• Abstracts data elements and enters coded information into the designated system.
• Manages unbilled coding report to support cash flow.
• Keeps informed of ICD guideline changes and updates.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
