Job summary

Henry Ford Health System is seeking a Coding Specialist to review and code diagnostic and/or procedural information from patient records for accurate reimbursement and research support. The role requires adherence to coding guidelines, accreditation requirements, and third-party policies.

Education options include RHIT/RHIA/CCS/CCA certifications or a related Medical Record Sciences degree. Prior coding experience is valued but not mandatory.

Qualifications

• Degree in Medical Record Sciences preferred but not required or successful completion of a certification program with RHIT, RHIA, CCS or CCA.
• Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
• Prior coding experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Identifies all diagnostic and operative procedures and other pertinent patient stay data by reviewing medical records.
• Assigns diagnostic and procedural codes per guidelines using encoder software.
• Sequences principal and secondary diagnoses/procedures for MS-DRG reimbursement.
• Verifies completeness of medical records within the EMR and reports discrepancies.
• Completes the discharge abstract using coded data and stay information.
• Adheres to applicable laws, policies, and ethical standards.
