Job summary

Huron Consulting Group Inc. in Chicago is seeking an Inpatient Coding Auditor to review inpatient coders and offshore auditors, ensuring DRG accuracy of at least 95% and coding quality.

You will communicate findings via phone, email, and instant messaging with client teams and payers, and report to the Huron Managed Services Domestic Coding team. Responsibilities include audits, quality checks, calibration sessions, and preparing reports with clear, actionable feedback.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years as inpatient coding auditor and 3+ years in inpatient coding.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in client environments.

Responsibilities

  • Audit inpatient coders and auditors for SOP and guidelines.
  • Perform quality checks and calibration audits.
  • Conduct calibration sessions with offshore teams.
  • Prepare audit reports and provide direct feedback.
  • Participate in client meetings and internal reviews.
  • Monitor guideline compliance and correct errors before rebilling.
  • Present findings clearly to leadership.
  • Utilize encoder software for ICD‑CM/PCS, MS‑DRG, etc.
  • Identify HACs, PSIs impacting data and reimbursement.

Job description

The Inpatient Coding Auditor will be responsible for auditing inpatient coders and offshore inpatient coding auditors to ensure coding accuracy and DRG accuracy of a minimum of 95%. The role requires frequent and effective communication via phone, email, and instant messaging with various client teams and payers. The Inpatient Coding Auditor reports to the Huron Managed Services Domestic Coding team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Audit inpatient coders and auditors to ensure compliance with client SOPs and coding guidelines.
  • Perform quality checks, calibration audits, and suggest improvements.
  • Conduct calibration sessions with offshore team counterparts and leaders.
  • Prepare audit reports and provide direct feedback to coders and auditors on areas of opportunity.
  • Participate in client interactions and internal stakeholder meetings.
  • Monitor coding guideline compliance and correct identified errors before claims are rebilled.
  • Conduct analysis and present summaries of findings to leadership in a clear, concise, and actionable format.
  • Utilize encoder software applications and online tools for ICD‑CM, ICD‑PCS, MS‑DRG, APR‑DRG, POA, SOI & ROM assignments.
  • Identify HACs, PSIs, and other indicators that could impact quality data and hospital reimbursement.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards, keep coding skills current through meetings and conferences, and maintain CEUs as required.
  • Stay informed on inpatient reimbursement guideline changes and new applications such as Hospital at Home.
Core Qualifications
  • Current permanent U.S. work authorization.
  • 2+ years of experience as an inpatient coding auditor.
  • 3+ years of experience in coding inpatient hospital accounts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, SharePoint).
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and workflow skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, follow‑through, and time‑management skills.
  • Professional interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to ramp up quickly on a client’s environment and systems.
  • Financial acumen and analytical skills; experience with revenue cycle data preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and self‑motivated; comfortable working independently.
Technical Qualifications
  • Certifications: CCS, CIC, or CDIP.
  • Preferred certifications: AHIMA micro‑credentials (Auditing: Inpatient Coding – AIC), RHIA.
  • Encoder experience preferred (e.g., 3M/Solventum, Encoder Pro, Codify).
  • Preferred experience with Epic, Cerner, or Meditech systems.

  • CODING AUDITING PRODUCTIVITY: ≥ 95%
  • DRG ACCURACY RATE: ≥ 95%
  • CODING ACCURACY: ≥ 95%
  • QUERY COMPLIANCE: 100% adherence to AHIMA/ACDIS standards

The estimated pay range for this role is $26.44 – $36.06 per hour. The actual salary may vary based on experience, required certifications, and market conditions.
