Job summary

Huron is seeking a Coding Auditor for ambulatory/professional coding auditing to ensure accuracy standards across client teams and payers.

The role involves auditing coders and auditors, reviewing documentation, and communicating findings by phone, email, and instant messaging. It reports to Huron Managed Services Domestic Coding team and requires 95%+ accuracy and collaboration with HIM and PFS teams.

Qualifications

  • Must hold CPC certification through AAPC.
  • 2+ years as a professional/profee/ambulatory coding auditor.
  • 3+ years coding professional/profee/ambulatory accounts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, SharePoint).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills; detail oriented.

Job description

The Coding Auditor – ambulatory/professional coding/profee will be responsible for auditing coders and coding auditors to ensure coding accuracy standards are met. The role requires frequent and effective communication via phone, email, and instant messaging with various client teams and payers.

The Coding Auditor will report to the Huron Managed Services Domestic Coding team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates Huron’s Vision and Values in all behaviors.
  • Functions as Coding Auditor
    • Ensure coding accuracy of ≥95% through audit of coders and auditors.
    • Perform quality checks and calibration audits on visits coded per client SOP.
    • Suggest improvements, schedule calibration sessions with offshore counterparts and leaders.
    • Assist in preparing audit reports and provide direct feedback to coders and auditors.
  • Firm understanding of clinical documentation guidelines.
  • Monitor compliance of coding guidelines and correct identified errors before claims rebill.
  • Conduct analysis and present summaries to leadership in clear, concise, actionable formats.
  • Utilize encoder software applications and online tools.
  • Assign appropriate codes using guidelines from CDC, ICD-CM, CMS, AHA Coding Clinic, AMA, AHIMA, and client procedures.
  • Navigate patient health records and computer systems to determine accurate diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Meet productivity standards for coding auditing per ambulatory coding norms.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards, update coding skills and knowledge, and maintain CEUs.
  • Stay current with changes in ambulatory/professional coding reimbursement guidelines and regulations.
  • Ensure patient information accuracy and appropriate signatures.
  • Consult with physicians, CDS, or providers for coder query practices.
  • Track missing documentation or ambulatory queries using EMR communication tools.
  • Collaborate with HIM and PFS teams to resolve billing, claims, denial, or appeal issues.
  • Problem‑solve coding and EMR workflow issues, notify leadership when necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of coding and reimbursement laws, Code of Ethics, and other policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Core Qualifications
  • Current permanent United States Work Authorization.
  • Working in the United States Day shift schedule.
  • Experience in coding specialties such as E&M, Oncology, Acute, Ambulatory, Cardiology, Radiology, Pathology, Anesthesia, Emergency Room, Surgery.
  • 2+ years experience as a professional/profee/ambulatory coding auditor.
  • 3+ years experience coding professional/profee/ambulatory accounts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, SharePoint).
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, quantitative, and workflow process skills.
  • Detail oriented with strong follow‑up and follow‑through skills.
  • Excellent time‑management, organization, and prioritization in a deadline‑driven environment.
  • Uses independent judgment, discretion, and decision‑making abilities.
  • Professional interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Rapid onboarding to client environments, processes, and systems.
  • Financial acumen and analytical skills.
  • Experience working with data from various sources.
  • Familiarity with revenue cycle systems and financial analysis.

Physical Demands
  • Seated at a desk/computer for 8 hours daily; repetitive use of keyboard and mouse; monitor use; video/audio conference calls; rarely lift up to 20 lbs; bending and standing as required.
Technical Qualifications
  • Required Certifications:
    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC.
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • AAPC CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor)
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
    • Encoder experience (3M/Solventum, Encoder Pro, Codify)
    • Epic, Cerner, Meditech experience.

The estimated pay range for this job is $26.44 - $37.50 per hour. The range represents a good faith estimate of the range that Huron reasonably expects to pay for this job at the time of the job posting. The job is eligible to participate in Huron’s benefit plans.
