At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

Essential Functions

• Interact and communicate effectively with the coding team and stakeholders.
• Participate in coding meetings and education sessions; assist others and share knowledge.

Service Functions

• Respond promptly to coding requests and review for accuracy.
• Initiate queries with physicians to clarify diagnoses or procedures using established processes.

Quality/Safety Functions

• Maintain high coding quality by assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes according to hospital policies and guidelines.
• Review and correct discharge dispositions and abstract data accurately into the system.
• Review documentation to determine diagnoses and procedures, utilizing all available tools for accuracy.
• Adhere to AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and official guidelines.

Finance Functions

• Code and abstract efficiently while maintaining accuracy.
• Support organizational goals related to Accounts Receivable.
• Ensure timely processing of work items in coding queues.

Growth and Innovation

• Evaluate personal performance and accept constructive criticism.
• Contribute ideas to improve coding quality and processes.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or equivalent experience.
