At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

People Essential Functions

• Interact and communicate effectively with the coding team and stakeholders.
• Participate in coding meetings and education, assist others, and share knowledge.

Service Essential Functions

• Respond promptly to coding requests and reviews for accuracy.
• Initiate queries with physicians for diagnoses and procedures as needed.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

• Maintain high coding quality and accuracy using electronic encoder applications.
• Review and correct discharge data for accuracy.
• Abstract data from medical records into the system, utilizing all available tools.
• Adhere to AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and official guidelines.

Finance Essential Functions

• Code and abstract efficiently while ensuring accuracy.
• Support organizational AR goals and process work items timely.

Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

• Evaluate and improve personal performance and contribute ideas for quality improvement.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or equivalent experience.
• One year of inpatient coding experience or completion of relevant training programs.
• Certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA from AHIMA.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficiency in coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
• Effective communication skills and proficiency with coding software and electronic health records.

Additional Requirements

• Business professional attire.
• May require travel within and outside Houston area.
• On-call duties may be required during emergencies.
