Qualifications

General Summary

Under direct supervision, accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts for appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations, following established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following outlines the general nature and level of work for this role. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties performed by personnel in this classification.

  • Serves as a clinical coding subject matter expert, utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate documentation issues in consultation with medical, clinical staff, and documentation specialists as needed.
    1. Analyzes, codes, and abstracts complex inpatient cases (e.g., trauma, rehab, neurology, critical care) using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS to ensure accurate APR-DRG/SOI/ROM and POA assignment.
    2. Collaborates with senior coders and other staff to share coding information and provide advice on complex cases.
  • Monitors daily work to facilitate timely billing, maintaining coding accuracy of 90% and productivity of 95% within established timeframes.
    1. Ensures compliance with quality and productivity standards.
  • Communicates with hospital departments regarding billing and registration issues, referring problems to management with detailed information. Prepares coding queries, collaborates with CDI, and understands PPCs, MHACs, and PQIs and their impacts.
  • Works with the auditing team to review audit findings, ensuring appropriate and compliant coding.
  • Adheres to AHIMA standards of ethical coding and compliance guidelines.
  • Supports the mission, vision, values, and policies of the University of Maryland Medical System. Performs additional duties or projects, such as coding corrections, as assigned by the manager.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent; formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training preferred; Associates or Bachelor's degree is a plus.
  • At least three years of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and abstracting experience in a Level 1 Trauma and Rehab hospital, or four years of inpatient hospital coding experience.
  • Certification such as CCS, RHIT, RHIA, or CIC is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong analytical and organizational skills, ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work under pressure, excellent customer service, problem-solving skills, familiarity with medical terminology, computer proficiency, and typing skills.
