Job Title: Innovation and Design Teacher

Reports to: Head of Middle School

Summary

The Innovation and Design Teacher is a visionary thinker with a passion for inspiring and supporting young people and for collaborating with colleagues. The successful candidate will further develop a curriculum across the Lower (K-4) and Middle (5th-8th) school divisions that teaches students to create, make, innovate, build, and design across STEM/STEAM and Problem-Based Learning.

Essential Functions

• Model a fundamental understanding of problem-based learning and design thinking, demonstrating an enthusiasm for taking risks and placing emphasis on process rather than product.
• Establish and maintain a well-organized Innovation Lab that fosters curiosity and promotes collaboration in a safe environment for students and faculty.
• Create a fun, safe, and engaging environment for students.
• Teach K-8 Innovation & Design and robotics classes.
• Guide students to explore, ideate, prototype, and test creative solutions to authentic problems.
• Guide students to succeed in their projects by providing support, expertise, and experience.
• Train students and faculty on tools and equipment within the Innovation Lab.
• Oversee and troubleshoot technology tools, including 3D printers, laser cutters, and robotics kits.
• Collaborate with teachers to incorporate innovative, design-based ideas into K-8 cross-curricular projects.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in the STEAM subjects.
• Experience in tinkering, making, and design thinking.
• The candidate must have a natural rapport with children and strong classroom management skills.
• Familiarity with coding and digital design tools.
• Highly effective communication, listening, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong planning, organization, and time management skills.

Physical Requirements

This job is performed indoors; the noise level can range from soft to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, walk, talk, read, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to type, finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The position is mobile across the campus, so the employee must be able to switch classrooms throughout the day, moving teaching materials from class to class, and make quick transitions.

Work Schedule and Position Status

The role is a 10-month position that follows the school’s academic calendar. The position is paid over a 12-month period and includes typical daily working hours of Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., during the academic year. The position is a full-time, benefits-eligible faculty position. The role is salaried and Exempt per FLSA guidelines.
