Job summary

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Receive, transport, supervise, and monitor inmate workers and community service defendants participating in programs from the SC Department of Corrections, Solicitor’s Office, Magistrate Courts, and Detention Center.
  • Receive written and/or verbal instructions for the assignment of inmates and community service workers; prepare and maintain reports of assigned activities and worker records.
  • Provide training to crew members on the policies, procedures, and laws governing inmates pertaining to the Department of Corrections; supervise an average of 40 inmates and community service defendants; monitor the timely completion of work assignments such as litter control, general custodial maintenance, grounds maintenance, vehicle maintenance, debris disposal, and delivery of equipment and goods; inspect work for compliance with instructions, policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety; provide assistance as needed.
  • Enforce program rules and regulations, monitor inmate movement in unconfined areas of the County, ensuring the safety of staff and the general public.
  • Operate general office equipment, a vehicle, various grounds maintenance equipment, and tools; supervise proper use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations or other incidents that put safety at risk; request backup assistance as needed.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Perform general clerical work as required, including preparing records and reports, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Attend meetings, training, seminars, etc., as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
Education and Certifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses, or self‑education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in criminal justice, corrections, or a closely related field.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Attend and obtain required certification from the S.C. Department of Corrections Training Academy.
Experience Requirements
  • Requires over six months and up to and including one year of relevant experience.
