Job summary

IBM Consulting FutureNow seeks a Linux & Infrastructure Specialist to design, build and support enterprise platforms across on‑premise, hybrid and cloud environments. You’ll automate tasks, harden systems and drive continuous improvement while collaborating with architects, security experts and delivery teams.

Qualifications

• Experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Linux Engineering or similar roles.
• Strong Linux admin experience (RHEL/Ubuntu/CentOS).
• Experience with enterprise server environments (physical/virtual/cloud).
• Know-how in virtualization (VMware/KVM/Hyper‑V).
• Proficient in scripting/automation (Bash/Python/PowerShell/Ansible).
• Understanding networking concepts (DNS/DHCP/TCP/IP).
• Knowledge of monitoring tools (Nagios/Zabbix/Grafana).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Security, patching, hardening and governance awareness.
• BPSS screening and potential NSV eligibility.

Your role and responsibilities

Build, Support and Modernise Critical Infrastructure Platforms

At IBM Consulting FutureNow, we’re helping clients modernise and optimise the technology platforms that underpin their most important services. We’re looking for Linux & Infrastructure Specialists to join our growing team, working across large-scale transformation and operational programmes in some of the UK's most complex and security-conscious environments.

This is a hands‑on engineering role where you’ll design, build, support and enhance enterprise infrastructure platforms. You’ll work across Linux systems, virtualisation platforms, cloud environments, automation tooling and core infrastructure services, ensuring systems remain secure, resilient and operationally efficient.

You’ll collaborate with architects, cloud engineers, security specialists and client teams to solve complex technical challenges while continuously developing your own skills and expertise.

We’re interested in capable infrastructure engineers with a passion for Linux, automation, operational excellence and continual improvement. Key Responsibilities

As a Linux & Infrastructure Specialist, you will:

• Design, build, administer and support Linux-based infrastructure platforms.
• Manage and maintain enterprise server environments across on‑premise, hybrid and cloud‑hosted infrastructure.
• Deploy, configure and troubleshoot Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, CentOS and similar operating systems.
• Support virtualisation platforms such as VMware, OpenShift Virtualization or similar technologies.
• Automate routine operational tasks using scripting and infrastructure automation tools.
• Implement system hardening, patching and vulnerability remediation activities.
• Monitor system health, performance and capacity, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
• Support storage, networking and infrastructure services to ensure availability and resilience.
• Assist with infrastructure migrations, upgrades and transformation initiatives.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary delivery teams and client stakeholders to solve technical challenges.
• Contribute to operational best practices, documentation, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
• Support infrastructure delivery within highly regulated and security‑conscious environments.

Required technical and professional expertise

We’re looking for experience in several of the following areas:

• Experience working in Infrastructure Engineering, Linux Engineering, Systems Administration or similar roles.
• Strong experience administering Linux operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu or CentOS.
• Experience supporting enterprise server environments across physical, virtual and cloud‑hosted infrastructure.
• Knowledge of virtualisation technologies including VMware, KVM, Hyper‑V or similar platforms.
• Experience scripting and automating tasks using Bash, Python, PowerShell, Ansible or similar technologies.
• Understanding of enterprise networking concepts including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing and firewalls.
• Experience supporting storage platforms and infrastructure services.
• Knowledge of monitoring and observability tooling such as Nagios, Zabbix, Grafana, Splunk, ELK or similar solutions.
• Understanding of infrastructure security principles, system hardening and patch management.
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
• Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure and platform issues.
• Strong problem‑solving, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience working within consulting, public sector or other regulated environments would be advantageous.
• This role is subject to successful completion of pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Depending on the client and assignment, additional National Security Vetting (NSV) may be required, including eligibility for Enhanced Security Check (eSC) or Enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV).
