Job description

Route36 is looking for a Senior Infrastructure Automation Engineer to join our team supporting Meta's BBE-PI organization. This role is focused on building software and automation used to deploy, configure, manage, monitor, and troubleshoot network and infrastructure devices at scale.

The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering skills with hands-on knowledge of networking and infrastructure. This is not a traditional network operations role. Rather than manually logging into devices and making configuration changes, you will build software and automation capable of managing hundreds or thousands of devices consistently and reliably.

The work supports Meta's global network infrastructure, including devices and systems associated with In-Line Amplifier (ILA) sites. You will work on challenging infrastructure problems involving networking, device automation, cloud services, provisioning, monitoring, and large-scale fleet management.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build software to automate the provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and management of network and infrastructure devices at scale
  • Develop automation capable of identifying configuration issues and automatically correcting them across large fleets of devices
  • Build tools and services that interact programmatically with routers, gateways, cellular devices, and other infrastructure hardware
  • Automate common networking operations such as route configuration, device provisioning, configuration validation, and health checks
  • Develop integrations using APIs, SNMP, and other device management interfaces
  • Build systems that can collect information from hundreds or thousands of devices, identify inconsistencies or failures, and take appropriate corrective action
  • Troubleshoot networking issues involving VPNs, tunnels, routing, LTE/cellular connectivity, and device communication
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure services running in Kubernetes environments
  • Work with AWS services and infrastructure provisioning tools to deploy and manage supporting cloud resources
  • Collaborate with engineers across networking, infrastructure, and production engineering teams to solve complex operational problems
  • Use automation and AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and accelerate infrastructure delivery
What We're Looking For
Software Engineering
  • Strong software engineering and programming experience, ideally with Go/Golang
  • Experience with Python, Rust, or similar languages is beneficial
  • Experience building production software, automation frameworks, internal tools, or infrastructure services
  • Ability to design automation that safely handles many different device states, failure conditions, and edge cases
  • Experience working with APIs and programmatic device or infrastructure management
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
Networking & Infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including routing, IP networking, VPNs, and network troubleshooting
  • Experience diagnosing VPN and tunnel issues, including understanding tunnel state and common Phase 1 / Phase 2 failures
  • Experience working with routers, gateways, or other network infrastructure
  • Familiarity with LTE/4G/5G gateways, cellular modems, SIM-based routers, or similar cellular-connected infrastructure is highly valuable
  • Experience with SNMP or similar protocols for retrieving and modifying device configuration or operational data
  • Experience automating network configuration rather than relying primarily on manual CLI-based administration
  • Experience managing or automating large fleets of devices is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerized infrastructure
  • Experience with AWS, including services such as EC2 and S3
  • Experience provisioning cloud infrastructure programmatically
  • Familiarity with Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools
  • Experience with monitoring, observability, and production troubleshooting
Examples of Problems You Might Solve
  • Build an application that identifies routers with an incorrect configuration across a fleet of hundreds of devices and automatically remediates them
  • Programmatically add or update routes across network devices through APIs
  • Collect operational values through SNMP, evaluate device state, and automatically make configuration changes when appropriate
  • Determine whether VPN tunnels are healthy and identify where failures are occurring
  • Provision and configure large batches of network or infrastructure equipment
  • Automate configuration and management of LTE gateways and cellular-connected devices
  • Build services that understand the current state of infrastructure and determine the appropriate action without requiring an engineer to manually log into each device
  • Deploy and operate the supporting services and automation within Kubernetes and cloud environments
Ideal Background

We're particularly interested in engineers who have worked at the intersection of software engineering, networking, and infrastructure automation. Strong candidates may come from infrastructure engineering, production engineering, network automation, site reliability engineering, or cloud infrastructure backgrounds.

You do not need to be a traditional network engineer, but you should understand networking well enough to troubleshoot infrastructure problems and then write software to solve those problems at scale.

Experience with large-scale infrastructure environments involving compute, storage, networking, telecommunications, or data center systems is a strong plus.
