Job summary

Year Up United is seeking an IT instructor to deliver college-level information technology courses to urban youth in Washington, DC. You will lead project-based, student-driven classes, provide one-on-one tutoring, and work under the Year Up United framework to ensure strong academic and professional outcomes.

The role emphasizes hands-on learning, curriculum refinement with colleagues, and preparing students for internships with corporate partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Alternative: non-technical bachelor plus relevant certifications (A+, MCSE).
  • 1–3 years of educator experience; industry/training experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct IT courses for ~20 students daily using college-level curriculum.
  • Deliver high-quality, student-driven, project-based classes daily.
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and guidance for self-directed learning.
  • Manage classroom per Year Up United contract and behavior modification model.
  • Collaborate with instructors to refine and document IT curriculum.
  • Identify key competencies to meet college and industry requirements.
  • Refine assessment tools to measure learning and student transitions to internships.
  • Ensure students' communication and professional skills meet internship/university needs.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Instruct Information Technology courses of approximately 20 students daily, using curriculum that aligns to college-level courses, and includes computer application, hardware and networking
  • Produce and instruct high quality, student driven and project-based classes daily in which students learn, are challenged, and enjoy the learning process
  • Provide guidance for self-directed learning and provide one‑on‑one tutoring outside of class
  • Manage the classroom successfully following the Year Up United contract and behavior modification model
  • Work with other instructors to refine and document the Information Technology curriculum
  • Identify key competencies for instruction to meet both college-level course requirements and industry‑workplace needs
  • Hone assessment tools to measure learning and growth of Year Up United students and to ensure successful transition of students to corporate internships; make use of these tools to continuously monitor and evaluate Year Up United’s performance
  • Ensure that students’ communications abilities and professional skills meet the needs of internship and University partners
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Information Technology, Computer Science etc.) required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical field plus relevant industry standard certification: A+, MCSE etc. acceptable
  • 1‑3 years of experience as an educator, additional experience as an industry/corporate training a plus
  • 1+ years’ experience teaching or working with urban youth preferred
  • An interest in implementing progressive methodologies and in creating a hands on, interactive learning environment
  • Experience managing projects with exceptional attention to detail
