The University of Utah’s University Analytics & Institutional Reporting (UAIR) office is modernizing its data infrastructure by migrating from an on-prem Oracle warehouse to a scalable AWS cloud environment. The role offers a chance to build a cloud foundation and shape the university's future data architecture.

Hybrid work is available; residence in Utah and campus presence three days per week are required.

Qualifications

  • bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) + 4 years or master’s degree (or equivalency) + 2 years of related work experience.
  • Experience migrating large-scale on-premise databases to AWS.
  • Experience with data transformation projects and higher education setting is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, build, test and deployment of cloud architecture in AWS.
  • Serve as the cloud architect subject-matter expert for UAIR.
  • Configure and manage UAIR VPC and networking in AWS.
  • Collaborate with ETL to deploy AWS Glue, AirFlow, Step Functions, Lamda.
  • Manage infrastructure for an on-prem Tableau Server and connect to AWS data.
  • Work with UIT to maintain a secure platform and IAM roles/policies.
  • Oversee UAIR operations in AWS SageMaker Unified Studio.

Job Summary

The University Analytics & Institutional Reporting ( UAIR ) office houses a transformational group of data professionals that turn complex university data into meaningful, highly valued information that is trusted by university leadership to drive strategic decisions, and generate official figures reported to regulatory, external and public agencies.

UAIR is seeking an experienced AWS cloud architect to oversee the aggressive modernization of the university’s data infrastructure. In this role you will lead the strategic execution of moving our data infrastructure from an on-premise Oracle warehouse to a modern, secure, and scalable AWS cloud environment. This role offers the unique opportunity to build a cloud foundation from the ground up and support the university in moving into a forward-looking AWS architecture.

Like many areas at the University of Utah, our office is a hybrid work environment and requires residence in the state of Utah with the ability to work from campus 3 days per week. More details can be discussed in an interview. Our office is not currently able to support individuals seeking sponsorship for visa—living in and working from the Utah is a requirement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, build, test and deployment of cloud architecture in AWS to support UAIR operations.
  • Serve as the cloud architect subject-matter expert for UAIR
  • Oversee the configuration and management of UAIR VPC and other networking configurations in AWS .
  • Collaborate with the data management team ETL to deploy AWS ETL services such as Glue, AirFlow, Step functions, Lamda etc.
  • Manage infrastructure for an on-premises Tableau Server – connecting to AWS data.
  • Work closely with UIT to establish and maintain a secure platform. Configure and deploy AWS IAM roles and polices to enable secure access.
  • Oversee the enablement and support of UAIR operations in AWS SageMaker Unified Studio.
  • Ensure redundancy and backup for all services.
  • Use prior knowledge and creativity to troubleshoot and solve technical issues as they arise.
  • Keep up to date with developments on current cloud computing solutions and processes.

Senior Supervisor, Information Systems Architecture Management:

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Manager, Information Systems Architecture Management:

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

Senior Manager, Information Systems Architecture Management:

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.

Associate Director, Information Systems Architecture Management:

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 10 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 8 years of directly related work experience.

Director, Information Systems Architecture Management:

Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 12 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 10 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect
  • Proven track record of successfully migrating large-scale, on-premise relational databases to AWS
  • Experience and acumen to move complex data transformation projects forward under minimal supervision.
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience with PeopleSoft data, Tableau, Lucid Chart, and/or similar ERP systems, visualization and diagramming tools.
  • A Master’s degree in MIS or related field
