Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn seeks a full-time Infection Preventionist within the Department of Infection Control. The Infection Preventionist evaluates quality of patient care and outcomes related to healthcare-associated infections, collects and analyzes data, and develops initiatives to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

The role also includes educating staff, presenting data to leadership, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

• Degree in Nursing, Epidemiology or related health field.
• Masters-level education in related field.
• Experience in structured patient education experience and/or design of patient education program.
• Ability to develop policies and procedures.
• Knowledgeable in adult education principles and able to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
• Demonstrate proficiency in accessing information systems; computer, fax, copier, multiline telephones, etc.
• Effective verbal, written and listening skills.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate infection data and recommend actions to reduce risks to patients and staff.
• Investigate suspected infectious outbreaks and assess exposure to communicable diseases.
• Develop, review, evaluate and implement infection control policies and procedures.
• Educate patients and staff regarding health promotion and infectious disease prevention.
• Serve as educational resource and conduct in-service education programs for hospital staff.
• Liaise with NYCDOHMH, NYSDOH and CDC; participate in PI activities.
• Plan and direct a hospital-wide plan for prevention, surveillance and control of infection.
