Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The job of Infant/Toddler was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing instructional support to instructors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the instructor for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
• Administer classroom assignments, assessments, etc. for the purpose of supporting instructors in the instructional process.
• Assist with the delivery of instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the instructor.
• Support daily classroom routines, including meals, toileting, diapering, rest time, and transitions, to promote a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
• Assist with the collection and uploading of documentation and data to support student checkpoints in Creative Curriculum.
• Support children's social emotional development by modeling positive behavior, reinforcing classroom expectations, and assisting with behavior guidance strategies under the direction of instructional staff.
• Provide immediate first aid and health related assistance as directed by health care professionals and program policies, including diapering, basic first aid, and medication support as assigned.
• Assist students individually, in small groups, and in whole group settings by reinforcing learning concepts, monitoring centers, facilitating activities, and supporting age-appropriate academic goals.
• Communicate with instructional staff and as directed, families to support student progress and the implementation of individual student goals.
• Maintain classroom equipment, work area, and student files and records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing a safe and clean learning environment and/or meeting the Head Start Program Performance Standard.
• Provide active supervision of students in all settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, hallways, mealtimes, and arrival and dismissal.
• Respond to emergency situations, including student injuries, safety concerns and building emergencies, by following established procedures and notifying appropriate personnel.
• Support instructors and other program staff in the implementation of curriculum, instructional strategies, and teaching methodologies and Early Learning Standards and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow DCIU Head Start Code of Conduct in all interactions with children, families, and staff in accordance with program policies and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in meetings and professional development activities to remain informed of job responsibilities, program expectations and best practices.
• Utilize data program and curriculum software effectively in the performance of duties and complete paperwork according to assigned timelines.
• Document and report observations, incidents and concerns related to student behavior, safety, wellbeing, and program conditions to appropriate instructional and administrative staff.
• Support students' social emotional development by modeling positive behavior, reinforcing classroom expectations, responding to challenging behaviors with developmentally appropriate strategies.
• Report suspected incidents (e.g., physical, sexual and/or substance abuse, contagious diseases, safety concerns, etc.) to appropriate parties for purpose of maintaining student’s health and safety and adhering to Federal and State regulations, IU, district and/or school policies.
• Perform other duties as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Education Required: High School diploma required, CDA or Associate's degree preferred

Certification Required: Will be expected to obtain and maintain a Pre-School CDA within 2 years of employment.

Education Required: Job-related experience is desired

Other Qualifications: Oral and written communication skills, computer literacy regarding management information systems, strong organizational skills, must use tact and diplomacy, display leadership on Early Childhood and grant funded program issues.. Adept at decision making; provide content area support, coaching and guidance; maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times. Ability to relate to and function effectively with people of varying background and position.
