Job summary

UNC Health's Children’s Hospital seeks a Human Milk and Formula Technician to prepare infant feedings in the Newborn Critical Care Center, coordinating with Pediatric Dietitians and Nursing. This role translates orders into recipes, prepares final feeding products, and delivers formulas to units.

You will ensure accurate fortification, manage milk inventory, and uphold safety standards in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Nutrition or related field.
• No experience required with an Associate's degree.
• With an unrelated field, requires two years of nutrition, food service, or quality-safety experience.
• With a high school diploma, requires four years of nutrition, food services, or quality-safety experience.
• Basic math skills; ability to weigh ingredients and prepare feeding formulas.

Responsibilities

• Translates feeding orders in EPIC into established recipes and clarifies with nursing and dietitians.
• Uses mathematical calculations to adjust recipe volumes and fortification grams.
• Fortifies infant formula and human milk with precision following procedures.
• Documents milk type, milk received, feeding preparation in the clinical flowsheet.
• Dispenses human milk and formula following barcode scanning procedures.
• Scans feedings, monitors inventory, maintains donor milk par levels.
• Ensures temperature standards for storage; monitors expiration dates.
• Updates patient feeding orders and recipe orders daily.
• Reports errors and participates in quality improvements for the room.
• Collaborates with Nursing during admission/transfer/discharge to deliver products.
• Collaborates with Lactation Services to inventory/procure donor milk.
• Collaborates with Genetics Services for metabolic formulas.
• Collaborates with dietitians in recipe development and progression.
• Participates in training new personnel and adheres to safety policies.
