Job summary

Stewart Companies is seeking a Steel Erector in the York area to raise, place, and join structural girders, columns, and other members to form frameworks. You will read blueprints and follow safety procedures while operating cranes and lifting equipment.

The role requires 3–5 years of structural steel experience, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to work outdoors in various weather with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Read and enforce safety procedures.
• Pass welding test (Stick & MIG).
• 3–5 years of structural steel experience.
• Versa lifts/Tri lifts experience is a plus.
• Capable of climbing a ladder and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Work at height and in confined spaces.
• Willing to work outside in all types of weather.
• Travel typically less than 10% of the time.
• Extend hours as needed.
• In-depth knowledge of construction procedures and OSHA guidelines.
• Valid driver's license with ability to hold Med Card.
• Team player; able to work overtime.
• Clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Read specifications or blueprints to determine locations and sizes of materials.
• Review blueprints to determine work requirements.
• Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts as instructed.
• Bolt, rivet, or weld structural steel members in place.
• Hoist steel using cranes or signaling operators.
• Verify alignment with plumb bobs or lasers.
• Set up rigging and move equipment to locations.
• Weld or cut steel components as required.
• Maintain a clean, safe jobsite and report safety issues.

Description

The Steel Erector has the ability to raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. May erect metal storage tanks and assemble prefabricated metal buildings and customer equipment to existing or new locations.

Essential Functions

• Must keep building and/or assigned areas of jobsite clean and organized as necessary to maintain a Safe and productive working environment.
• Ensure that proper Safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Foreman/General Superintendent, Safety Manager, or HR Manager.
• Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of materials required.
• Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements.
• Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors.
• Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
• Fasten structural steel members to hoist cables, using chains, cables, or rope.
• Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment.
• Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels.
• Hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural steel members.
• Set up rigging and move customer equipment to existing or new locations.
• Signal equipment operators to indicate proper equipment positioning.
• Cut, bend, or weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, or welding equipment.
• Cut metal components for installation.
• Weld metal components.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce Safety procedures

• Proficient in Stick & MIG welding processes to pass a welding test
• 3-5 years of structural steel experience
• Experience with versa lifts and tri lifts is a plus
• Capable of climbing a ladder, reaching overhead, bending, pulling on wrenches, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Capable of working at height and in confined spaces.
• Willing to work outside in all types of weather
• Ability to travel as needed (typically less than 10% of the time)
• Ability to work extended hours as needed
• In-depth knowledge of construction procedures, equipment and OSHA guidelines
• Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to hold a Med Card
• Works well as part of a team.
• Ability to work overtime as needed
• Clean driving record
