Position: Sewing Machine Operator
Location: House of Holmes, Mesa, AZ
Reports to: Production Manager
Pay Rate: Based on skill level (outlined in levels below)
Job Summary:
The Sewing Machine Operator (Level O-IV) is essential to the manufacturing process, responsible for stitching high-quality cut-and-sew products. This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining sewing machines while ensuring that production targets are met, and quality standards are upheld. The ideal candidate will have expertise in sewing techniques, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Machine Setup and Operation:
- Prepare sewing machines according to product specifications, including threading, tension adjustments, and needle selection.
- Operate industrial sewing machines (e.g., single needle, overlock) to stitch fabric pieces together, adhering to established patterns and guidelines.
- Make necessary adjustments to ensure smooth operation and troubleshoot minor machine issues during use.
- Repair textiles or garments as needed and ensure machines are ready for the next operation.
Stitching and Finishing:
- Perform stitching techniques (e.g., straight stitches, zigzag, decorative stitches) based on design requirements.
- Trim excess threads, remove basting stitches, and apply finishing touches for a polished product.
- Draw guidelines or markings on materials as required by patterns or instructions.
- Ensure stitching accuracy and consistency through proactive machine adjustments.
Quality Control:
- Inspect sewn products for defects, including stitching errors, missed stitches, or fabric irregularities.
- Measure and verify product dimensions to ensure compliance with design specifications.
- Promptly report deviations or defects to supervisors for corrective action.
- Maintain a commitment to high-quality standards and workmanship.
Production Targets and Workflow:
- Meet or exceed daily production goals while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Optimize sewing processes to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with the production team to achieve smooth workflows and timely task completion.
- Understand project deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively within a team environment.
Machine Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance on assigned machines, including cleaning, oiling, and minor repairs.
- Conduct start-of-shift and end-of-shift maintenance for optimal machine performance.
- Escalate significant machine malfunctions to supervisors or maintenance staff.
Workplace Safety:
- Adhere to safety protocols to maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Operate machinery safely and responsibly, reporting any safety concerns or incidents promptly.
- Participate in safety training sessions as required.
Team Collaboration and Mentoring:
- Work collaboratively with team members to meet production targets and resolve challenges.
- Assist in training and mentoring new operators, sharing knowledge of techniques and machine use as needed.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Prepare and set up sewing machines for operation.
- Stitch fabric pieces per specifications, ensuring adherence to quality guidelines.
- Inspect and measure products during and after stitching for accuracy.
- Perform finishing touches such as trimming threads and marking guidelines.
- Monitor machine performance and address issues proactively.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the work area.
- Collaborate with the production team to meet daily output goals.
Qualifications:
Required Skills and Experience:
- At least 1 year of industrial or home sewing experience; 2 years preferred.
- Ability to operate industrial sewing machines and perform basic troubleshooting.
- Attention to detail and precision in sewing and finishing tasks.
- Strong time management and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Additional Skills:
- Willingness to learn new techniques and operate advanced machinery.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus and may qualify for a pay differential.
