Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Maintain OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping (OSHA 300/300A/301) and track findings.

  • Develop and update safety and IH policies, SOPs, and program documents.

Client: Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Salary Range: $95,000 to $115,000

Position Overview

We are seeking a mid- to senior-level Industrial Hygienist/Safety Specialist to provide full-time onsite industrial hygiene and occupational safety support at FEMA Headquarters in Washington, DC. This position requires a seasoned professional with demonstrated experience conducting workplace exposure assessments, developing job hazard analyses (JHAs), supporting occupational safety and health programs, and translating technical findings into practical risk-control recommendations.

The Industrial Hygienist/Safety Specialist will play a key role in maintaining regulatory compliance, evaluating workplace hazards, strengthening safety program effectiveness, and supporting FEMA leadership through clear written communication, defensible technical documentation, data analysis, and incident review. Strong technical judgment, writing ability, organization, and interpersonal communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
Safety & Industrial Hygiene Program Support
  • Maintain and manage OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping, including OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 logs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Conduct safety incident reviews, root cause analyses, and trend evaluations; prepare clear written summaries and corrective action recommendations.
  • Support development, review, and periodic updates of safety and industrial hygiene policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and program documents.
  • Assist with internal and external safety audits, inspections, and assessments; track findings and corrective actions to closure.
Administrative & Technical Writing Functions
  • Prepare high-quality written reports, memoranda, SOPs, policy updates, and briefing materials for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Maintain organized electronic records for incidents, inspections, training, and IH program documentation.
  • Coordinate with FEMA stakeholders, contractors, and management to support safety initiatives and compliance requirements.
Field & Technical Industrial Hygiene Support (As Needed)
  • Conduct workplace exposure assessments, basic air or noise monitoring, walkthrough evaluations, and qualitative or quantitative hazard assessments in office, support, and field environments.
  • Develop and maintain job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk-control recommendations for routine and non-routine work activities, including identification of hazards, exposure pathways, required controls, and PPE requirements.
  • Support PPE evaluations and recommendations based on identified hazards.
Regulatory & Compliance Support
  • Ensure work aligns with OSHA regulations, FEMA policies, and applicable federal occupational safety and health requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement of safety and IH programs through data analysis and best-practice recommendations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, safety, engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Minimum 6+ years of professional industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or environmental health and safety experience, including demonstrated responsibility for exposure assessments, hazard evaluations, incident reviews, and programmatic support.
  • Required experience conducting workplace exposure assessments and developing job hazard analyses (JHAs) for occupational safety and industrial hygiene activities.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA recordkeeping and incident investigation processes.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to clearly document findings and recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint or similar systems).
  • Ability to work effectively onsite in a federal office environment and interact professionally with government staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting federal facilities.
  • Experience developing or updating SOPs, safety manuals, or policy documents.
  • Familiarity with administrative-focused safety and occupational health programs.
  • Onsite, full-time position at FEMA Headquarters in Washington, DC.
  • Standard 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday.
  • Primarily office-based administrative work with occasional field activities.
