Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts studies, investigations, and design reviews using ergonomic and human factor principles to develop and apply data to the human control and human impact and limitations involved in the human work systems and man-machine relationships of a variety of systems, subsystems, components, aids, and devices in both clinical and non-clinical environments.
  • Evaluates data and reports findings and recommendations for design changes to achieve optimum system use and mission accomplishment in terms of human limitations and capabilities.
  • Provides technical assistance in program establishment.
  • Develops and conducts ergonomics classes.
  • Develops training modules objectives, visual aids, lesson plans, learning exercises, student documents, and examination materials for ergonomic assessment and hazard prevention and control, in the deployed environment.
  • Assists with engineering standards and specifications, manuals, technical bulletins, circulars, regulations, technical, or field manuals, concerning ergonomic man-machine system, subsystem, and component design in both clinical and non-clinical environments.
  • Attends symposiums, training offerings, and conferences. Participates in VA committees, advisory groups, or engineering standards organizations.
  • Provides interpretation and guidance on applicable ergonomic standards and guidelines.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 08:00AM -04:30PM

Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR): This Position has individual occupational requirements. You must have: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene OR a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. NOTE: Transcripts must be provided to validate the education from an accredited school or the certification requirement.

In additional to the IOR, you must possess the specialized experience and/or education for this position:

GS-11 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Hazard and/or safety risk assessment for employee exposure; Testing and sampling for chemical exposures in the work environment; Management of hazardous chemicals used in the work environment including hazardous waste storage and working with contractor for proper disposal of such chemicals; Management of Respirator Protection program including fit testing and evaluation; Evaluation and recommendation for safe work process/procedures including Personal Protective Equipment including necessary training of employees.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-11 level. You must have completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-11 level. NOTE: Transcripts must be attached.To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-11. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
