Job summary

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is seeking an HVAC Utility Operator to maintain safe, efficient operation of industrial boilers, chillers, heat pumps, and related equipment at Washington Dulles International Airport.

This journey-level role works under the HVAC Operator in Charge during evenings, nights and weekends, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and responding to trouble calls. Strong BAS and safety knowledge are essential.

Qualifications

• Four years of progressively responsible experience operating, monitoring, or maintaining industrial central plant heating and cooling systems using high‑temperature/high‑pressure hot water generators, industrial chillers, and chilled water storage tanks.
• Two of the four years must be in safely servicing, troubleshooting, and operating all central plant auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, pumps, cooling towers, and heat exchanges.
• Knowledge of boiler and generator safety controls and troubleshooting.
• Ability to start and stop equipment using BAS.
• Ability to make decisions and direct actions to maintain or restore service.
• Knowledge of central plant HVAC systems and journey‑level skills.
• Skill in using manuals, schematics, blueprints, and tools in journey‑level HVAC work.
• Ability to analyze data and work safely.
• Ability to speak and write effectively.
• Experience with computer-based work orders and time systems.

Responsibilities

• Receive after‑hours work requests and take action for HVAC-related requests, referring non-HVAC issues as needed.
• Record readings from meters and gauges on high‑pressure boilers, chillers, and control panels; adjust controls and troubleshoot.
• Advise supervisors on major malfunctions and safety concerns.
• Restart boilers and chillers after power outages.
• Respond to alarm panels and perform preventive maintenance.
• Perform routine rounds of machine rooms to ensure proper operation and minor repairs.
