Job summary

New-Leader-Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids, IA is seeking an Industrial Engineer to analyze and improve manufacturing processes. The role covers design, testing, sourcing, and cost justification of equipment and methods to reduce costs and waste.

The engineer will lead the implementation of new equipment, support prototyping, and ensure smooth transitions of new products into production, while maintaining safety and efficiency standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in analyzing and providing recommendations on continuous improvements in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with machine computer software such as laser cut programming, press brake software, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with production equipment and knowledge of equipment capabilities preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication across all company levels, customers, and suppliers.
  • Experience with tooling/fixture design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Significant experience with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) in manufacturing.
  • Development and documentation of processes, procedures, and standards.
  • Understanding of fixture fundamentals and GD&T principles.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, ERP and reporting programs.

The Industrial Engineer is responsible for determining cause and solutions to various technical manufacturing process and issues. Key responsibilities include research, development, and implementation of alternate processes, parts, tooling, equipment, or systems or recommendations to change current processes within operations to reduce costs and waste.

  • Designs, develops, tests, sources, and cost-justifies various tools, machinery and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods.
  • Manages the implementation of new equipment or technology, ensures its satisfactory operation, and instructs others to use the new equipment properly.
  • Performs product/process analysis including observation, measurements, data collection and data interpretation for cost reduction, quality improvement, efficiency, and safety improvement. Recommends methods for improving utilization of personnel, material, facilities, and utilities.
  • Supports prototyping activities of new product development. Manages the successful transition of new products into the production area.

  • Stays informed on both existing and new sheet metal processing methods, new manufacturing technology and equipment, and investigates potential applications. Recommends incorporation of new technology for company applications where feasible and practical.
  • Evaluates parts for manufacturing applications based on variables such as cost, efficiency and practicality.
  • Develops and documents standard processes, methods, tooling, production controls, and cost standards for new and existing programs and equipment; supervises their assembly and proofing.
  • Confers with vendors, staff, and management personnel regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and project status.
  • Performs research, design and development of manufacturing processes, including production flow, and assembly methods.
  • Prepares and maintains detailed layouts of buildings and equipment.
  • Re-designs, repairs, or replaces in-process production program equipment, production control hardware, and tooling.

Requirements
Qualifications and Essential Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in analyzing and providing recommendations on continuous improvements in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with machine computer software, such as laser cut programming, press brake software, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with production equipment and knowledge of equipment capabilities is preferred.
  • Oral and written communication skills appropriate for working with all levels of the company, customers, and suppliers.
  • Experience with low to medium volume tooling and fixture design, implementation, and maintenance is required. Familiarity with inspection methods, along with solid troubleshooting skills, is required.
  • Significant experience with Computer Aided Design software (SolidWorks preferred) in a manufacturing setting.
  • Prior experience in the development and documentation of various processes, procedures, and standards is needed.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of fixture fundamentals and GD&T principles.
  • Computer skills to include following programs: MS Office, Word, Excel, Access, Visio. Experience working with ERP and reporting programs required.
  • Must be able to see the “big picture”, hearing and understanding the needs of both production and engineering, and communicating effectively to insure that the needs of both are optimized.

The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet. Employee may be exposed to shop environment while distributing documents to shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the plant shop environment is moderately loud. Position involves working indoors and outdoors with some exposure to weather conditions. Handles hazardous waste according to company policy and participates in annual hazardous waste training.
