About The Team And The Role

This role will be part of the Americas Corporate Indirect Tax team, providing indirect tax technical advice and support to internal stakeholders across eBay’s core marketplace, subsidiaries, and affiliated businesses! As a senior individual contributor, this role will independently manage complex indirect tax matters and cross-functional initiatives. It requires strong technical knowledge and judgment to translate tax requirements into clear, practical business partnership and to carry matters through implementation.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, self-directed tax professional with excellent analytical and investigative abilities, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to think critically and creatively. Success in this role requires a strong sense of ownership, comfort operating in a fast-paced and evolving environment, and the ability to build trusted relationships within Tax and across the broader organization. This individual will proactively identify indirect tax risks and opportunities, develop practical solutions, and continuously look for ways to improve processes and how we support the business!

What You Will Accomplish
  • Deliver timely, accurate, and practical indirect tax advice to business units across eBay’s core marketplace and broader portfolio of businesses.
  • Independently research and analyze intricate tax matters. These include proposed and enacted legislation and regulatory developments. Assess their impact on eBay’s businesses. Then develop appropriate recommendations and tax positions.
  • Evaluate new and evolving business initiatives, products, services, and operating models to uncover indirect tax implications and requirements.
  • Translate technical tax conclusions into clear business and functional requirements and partner with Product, Engineering, and other collaborators to support successful implementation.
  • Partner effectively with collaborators across eBay and its subsidiaries, including Tax Product, Engineering, Legal, Accounting, Finance, Customer Service, and other business functions.
  • Lead internal audit initiatives, including enhancing taxability monitoring and reporting in partnership with Product, Engineering, and Finance Innovation & Transformation (FIT).
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of tax policies, technical positions, procedures, requirements, and business-specific considerations.
  • Support indirect tax audits and controversy matters for eBay, its subsidiaries, and affiliated businesses, including responding to information requests and supporting technical tax positions.
  • Support M&A integration and post-acquisition indirect tax matters as needed including performing nexus analyses and leading registration/VDA efforts when needed.
  • Proactively find opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, controls, documentation, and scalability across the organization.
What You Will Bring
  • Deep technical knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax, including the ability to independently research, interpret, and apply complex tax laws and guidance and assess the impact on reporting requirements.
  • Working knowledge of indirect tax regimes in Canada, Mexico, and emerging markets in South America is a plus.
  • Proven track record of independently leading and managing multiple complex projects and initiatives with limited oversight.
  • Strong research skills, with demonstrated experience interpreting proposed and enacted legislation, regulations, and other guidance and assessing the impact on business operations and tax positions and translating this into tax engine configuration requirements.
  • Experience analyzing & reconciling large data sets using Alteryx and/or other data wrangling tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess indirect tax implications across complex business models, products, entities, transaction flows, and operating structures, and translate technical tax conclusions into clear, concise, and actionable guidance for both tax and non-tax business and technology collaborators.
  • Experience with indirect tax developments and trends affecting marketplaces, e-commerce, digital services, or the broader digital economy.
  • Experience interacting directly with tax authorities and supporting indirect tax audits or controversy matters.
  • Strong ownership, initiative, and judgment, with the ability to proactively identify issues, develop solutions, and drive matters to completion.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, get-it-done approach.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt to changing priorities, and operate effectively across time zones, legal entities, business units, and within a matrixed organization.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Google Workspace, and tax research tools required.
  • Solid understanding of SAP, and/or indirect tax technology, including Vertex, is preferred.
  • Experience bringing to bear AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, NotebookLM, Gemini) to improve tax research, analysis, documentation, or process efficiency is a plus.
Basic Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with progressively increasing scope and accountability, gained in public accounting (Big Four or similar) and/or an in-house indirect tax function for a multinational company preferred.
