Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. seeks an Indirect Senior Tax Analyst to support indirect tax compliance, reporting and audit activities for the company and subsidiaries. You will work with Tax Analysts, guiding and developing them while assisting with tax calculations and filings.

The role requires a bachelor’s in accounting and 3+ years in indirect tax, with strong knowledge of OneSource Property Tax and Excel. Occasional travel to other sites is possible.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • 3+ years in corporate tax or public accounting, indirect tax returns (multi-state property tax and sales & use).
  • Strong understanding of indirect taxes.
  • Ability to learn complex tax rules and apply them to transactions.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP; strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; capable of independent work.

Responsibilities

Job description

Location: Cleveland, OH Cleveland-Cliffs is looking for an Indirect Senior Tax Analyst to support indirect tax compliance, reporting, and audit activities for Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and its subsidiaries(“CCI”). This position also assists with various tax department administrative tasks, including the management of the indirect tax compliance calendar. As an Indirect Senior Tax Analyst, this individual will work closely with the CCI Tax Analysts, providing guidance and assisting in their technical and professional development. In addition, the Indirect Senior Tax Analyst may assist with various direct tax calculations, analyses, and filings. While performing these various assignments, the Indirect Senior Tax Analyst will interface with other CCI departments (e.g., Accounting, Commercial, Financial Planning, Legal, Treasury, etc.) and, where appropriate, CCI’s external advisors. The individual filling this position will report directly to the Indirect Tax Manager.

Summary of Responsibilities

Assist with the preparation and submission of multi-state indirect tax returns including, but not limited to, property and sales & use and supporting work papers and files for CCI entities. This includes assisting with requesting, gathering, and processing financial information, utilizing software applications to effectively generate the tax returns as well as supporting work papers and files while providing a clear audit trail to source documentation. Assist with indirect tax accrual calculations, account reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and other financial reporting requirements. Review work papers prepared by tax analysts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable tax laws and company standards. Assist with the preparation and mailing of indirect tax payments. Assist with the management of the annual indirect tax calendar. Assist with indirect tax audits and inquiries, including gathering supporting documentation for use in responding to matters raised by exam teams. Assist in the analysis of new and proposed tax legislation and regulations, reporting requirements, and court cases, identifying potential impacts to CCI and actions to be taken. Assist with maintaining the electronic files and records of the tax department. Actively identify and implement tax department process improvements including, but not limited to, utilizing software to its maximum potential. Participation on quality improvement teams. Minimal travel to other CCI sites.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm working directly on the preparation of indirect tax returns, specifically multi-state property tax and sales & use tax.
  • Possess a strong understanding of indirect taxes.
  • Must have a desire to learn the intricacies of indirect taxation and apply the acquired knowledge.
  • Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations and apply them to business transactions.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of accounting / U.S. GAAP principles (financial statements, trial balances, journal entries, etc.).
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Expresses ideas clearly in documents with a focus on organization, structure, grammar, language, and terminology adjusted to the characteristics and needs of the audience.
  • Orally expresses ideas effectively in individual and group situations.
  • Establishes high-performance standards, striving to attain those standards, taking initiative, and demonstrating commitment to the organization and to the profession.

  • Proficient in OneSource Property Tax or similar software used in the preparation of indirect tax returns.
  • Proficient in Excel
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Oracle, Ellipse, Hyperion, SAP, and Sage Fixed Assets.
  • Strong technology skills, knowledge of information systems.
  • CPA license is preferred
Salary

The salary range for this role is $85,000-$110,000. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.
