Job summary

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of criminal law and court proceedings.
• Ability to interpret and apply New York State and Federal criminal codes.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to prepare for and present cases in court.

Responsibilities

• Represent indigent defendants at every stage of proceedings after arrest.
• Assist the Public Defender in investigation, preparation, and appeals.
• Confers with defendants, law enforcement, judges, and DA staff.
• Prepare cases for trial, including motions, hearings, and plea discussions.
• Supervise clerical staff and maintain case records.
• Tries cases, including jury selection and closing arguments.
• May handle post-judgment motions and appeals.
