Allegany County Public Defender's Office seeks an Assistant Public Defender to represent indigent clients in county and state courts across the Southern Tier, about 90 miles south of Rochester and 75 miles southeast of Buffalo.

The role involves arraignments in Justice Courts, preparing cases, filing motions, conducting hearings and trials, and negotiating dispositions with the District Attorney's Office; on-call requirements may apply during evenings and holidays.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in New York State.
• Eligibility to represent indigent clients in criminal and family court.
• Ability to prepare briefs for hearings and trials.
• Ability to conduct investigations and gather evidence.
• Effective written and oral communication.

Responsibilities

• Represent indigent clients at all stages of proceedings.
• Prepare case files, briefs, and conduct investigations.
• Appear in local courts for arraignments as needed.
• Negotiate dispositions with the District Attorney's Office.
• Coordinate with social services and treatment providers.
