Job summary

Primary Recruiting Services partners with a large organization to hire a State Tax Manager to lead state income and sales & use tax across multiple jurisdictions. The role focuses on tax compliance, planning, audit support, and leveraging technology for process improvements.

The ideal candidate has 6+ years of state tax experience, strong Excel skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally while managing multiple priorities. CPA/MST is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 6+ years of progressive state tax experience.
  • Strong experience across both state income tax and sales & use tax.
  • Hands-on experience with sales & use tax technology and exemption certificate management systems.
  • Strong understanding of multi-jurisdictional tax compliance, nexus rules, and apportionment methodologies.
  • Experience managing state tax audits through resolution.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and review state income and franchise tax returns, extensions, and estimated payments.
  • Oversee quarterly and annual state income tax provision work, including deferred tax analysis under ASC 740.
  • Perform and review apportionment calculations and multi-state tax workpapers.
  • Monitor state tax developments and evaluate potential impacts on the organization.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual sales & use tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Manage tax configurations, rates, and taxability within tax technology platforms.
  • Monitor nexus determinations, including economic nexus thresholds.
  • Maintain and validate exemption certificates and related documentation.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for state income and sales & use tax audits.
  • Manage audit documentation, information requests, and resolution strategies.
  • Identify potential areas of state tax exposure and help develop strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Partner cross-functionally with internal teams on tax-related business matters.
  • Provide state tax guidance related to transactions and business activities.
  • Support M&A due diligence, integration, and post-transaction tax compliance.
  • Identify and implement process improvements across tax compliance, reporting, and reconciliations.
  • Utilize tax technology and automation tools to improve accuracy and efficiency.

We are partnering with a large, established organization that is looking to add a State Tax Manager to its tax team. This is a strong opportunity for an experienced state tax professional who brings a combination of state income tax and sales & use tax experience and wants to take ownership of a broad multi-state tax function.

This role will oversee state and local tax compliance, planning, and audit support across multiple jurisdictions while partnering closely with other areas of the organization. There is also a strong focus on tax technology, process improvement, automation, and risk management.

What We're Looking For
