Job summary

The City of Federal Way is seeking a part-time program leader to guide day trips for adults with disabilities on Fridays and Saturdays, and to support social programs on Friday evenings.

This role requires strong safety awareness, basic first aid, reliable transportation of participants, mobility assistance, and the ability to create an inclusive, welcoming and engaging recreational environment that respects diverse needs across age groups and abilities.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Washington Driver's License required.
  • Background checks and references will be conducted.
  • Availability to work two Fridays and Saturdays per month.
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Must be able to work with participants, families and caregivers.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and assist with mobility.
  • Commitment to inclusive, safe recreational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a city-accessible shuttle to and from trip destinations.
  • Lead day trips for adults with disabilities on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Ensure participant safety throughout trips and programs.
  • Lead group activities with enthusiasm and keep participants engaged.
  • Monitor participant behavior and provide support as needed.
  • Administer basic first aid and respond to emergencies.
  • Maintain communication with the program coordinator.
  • Assist participants with tasks such as purchasing food and navigating locations.
  • Facilitate activities and games; engage participants.
  • Attend staff trainings and meetings as required.
  • Arrive early and stay until participants are picked up.

Job description

NOTE: This is a part-time position, approximately 5‑16 hours per week, with opportunities for additional hours through other Inclusive Recreation activities. This position does not include benefits.

Lead day trips for adult individuals with disabilities on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the community. Support social programs on Friday evenings. Serve as a positive role model, ensure participant safety, assist with activities, and provide a welcoming and inclusive environment.

  • Monitor participant behavior and provide appropriate support.
  • Administer basic first aid and respond to emergencies when needed.
  • Maintain communication with the program coordinator.
  • Assist participants with tasks such as purchasing food, navigating locations, or using mobility aids like wheelchairs.
  • Facilitate prearranged activities, projects, or games.
  • Interact with participants, families, and caregivers, addressing questions and concerns.
  • Propose ideas for future trips and activities.
  • Attend staff training sessions and meetings as required.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before program start time and remain until all participants are picked up.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
  • Ability to work at least two Fridays and Saturdays per month.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, patient, and committed to providing meaningful recreational experiences.
  • Culturally sensitive and inclusive, with an understanding of diverse participant needs.
  • Collaborative mindset to work effectively with instructors and trip leaders.
  • Interest in recreation and a variety of activities.
  • Knowledge of safety and emergency procedures.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Successful completion of employment reference and background checks.
Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort:
  • Requires travel to various locations for trips and activities.
  • Physical demands include carrying, bending, stooping, squatting, standing, and walking long distances during shifts.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to push individuals in wheelchairs.
  • Ability to adapt and perform effectively under high-stress situations, such as emergencies.
