City of Bellevue invites applicants to join the Adaptive Recreation Program Team at the Highland Community Center. The role involves leading and facilitating recreational activities for adults with intellectual disabilities, including arts, dance, bingo, sports, fitness, crafts, and special events.
Job Summary
As a Program Staff member you will supervise and engage groups of 10–30 participants, ensuring safety, inclusion, and a positive experience. You will adapt programs to participant ability levels and maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all.
Schedule
Monday through Friday: 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Times may vary depending on courses the staff member chooses to facilitate.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Facilitate all aspects of recreation within assigned program for participants
- Responsible for assigned class activities
- Coach participants in various activities
- Perform data entry for program management
- Lead volunteers when required
- Teach small classes
- Create displays for program activities
- Adapt course material to participant ability level
- Accountable for participants during programs
- Provide assistance feeding participants
- Perform word processing tasks
- Prepare and set up programs; explain program requirements
- Operate specialized equipment
- Apply basic first aid when necessary
- Assist with set up, maintenance, and/or operation of data management processes
- Work in more than one assignment in the Recreation Division
Supervision Received And Exercised
- Work is performed with moderate supervision
- Job responsibilities are clearly defined, with opportunities for decision making within program activity
- Program may be facilitated with another staff member
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Thorough knowledge of programs and services assigned
- Skillful interpersonal contacts extending beyond the work group to patrons and the public
- Significant and ongoing public contact, building relationships with patrons
- Ability to collaborate and communicate with other staff members
- Experience working with multiple participants within various programs
Education, Experience, And Other Requirements
- Preferred: High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 1 year of prior work experience or education in recreation or a related field
- Prior experience with children or adults living with intellectual disabilities
- First Aid, CPR, or other specialized training or experience required
Physical Demands
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing and using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms
- Requires close vision and ability to adjust focus
- Work may be emotionally demanding or stressful (working with at‑risk youth, physically disabled persons, or potentially dangerous situations)
- May call for physical interventions, pushing wheelchairs and loading vans
- Work performed both indoors and outdoors
- Work may be physically demanding (participation in athletics, lifting heavy loads, etc.)
Definition Of a Variable Employee
- Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire
- Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less
- Considered full‑time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12‑month measurement period (or 130 hours per month)
