Job summary

Mason Public Schools in Michigan seeks a Special Education Assistant to support students with a variety of needs in a classroom setting under certified staff supervision. The role includes one-on-one or small-group instruction, data collection, and helping implement behavior plans.

You will collaborate with teachers, assist with transitions, and help maintain a calm, positive learning environment. Prior experience with children and a cooperative attitude are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience working with children
• Positive attitude and ability to build rapport with students
• Ability to work cooperatively with teachers and students
• Associate degree in education or college coursework in education and/or related areas
• Experience as an instructional assistant/paraprofessional
• Experience supporting students with behavioral needs and/or implementing behavior plans (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Provide instructional and behavioral assistance under certified staff supervision
• Redirect behavior before it escalates using proactive strategies and routines
• Support implementation of a behavior plan and document as directed
• Assist with transitions and student regulation (structured movement, calming strategies)
• Maintain a calm and positive learning environment using de-escalation supports and timely communication
• Perform additional training in CPI or Handle With Care
• Provide general classroom support in general or special education settings
• Assist with tutoring and intervention work for academics and social skills
• Prepare, modify, and organize instructional/behavioral materials
• Monitor student engagement and movement around the building
• Maintain confidentiality for school-related information
