Job summary

Wells Academy is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to spend a major portion of time in the regular education classroom. The role involves direct service to students, collaboration with general education teachers, and co-teaching in core subjects to support inclusion.

Responsibilities include planning adaptations, developing IEPs, and participating in child study teams. A bachelor’s with special education certification is required, with master’s degree as an alternative pathway.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and teaching certification with special education endorsement, or master’s degree with qualifications for temporary or full approval as special education teacher.
• Experience: none required; successful special education teaching experience preferred.
• Skilled in interviewing, individual and group treatment techniques.
• Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for special education students.
• Demonstrated initiative and understanding in working with students, parents/guardians, teachers and staff.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to make decisions in accordance with board policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct services to special education students in regular classroom.
• Provide consultation to general education teachers for planning and adaptations for special education students.
• Team teach with general education teachers in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
• Assist general education teachers and aides with curriculum modifications and individualized support.
• Assist teachers and the school social worker in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
• Consult with teachers in assigning grades and developing evaluative measures for students on caseload.
• Participate in child study teams and assist with evaluation of educational needs and intervention strategies.
• Schedule and conduct IEPT meetings.
• Identify student deficits and strengths and write goals/IEP.
• Work as a member of MET for students referred for services.
• Assist teachers with curriculum and classroom activity adaptations.
• Serve as liaison to parents of special education students and encourage participation.
