Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Licensed as a School Librarian or Unified Media Specialist (all grades) by the Massachusetts Department of Education, or in the process of licensure.
  • Candidates with licensure in Elementary Education may be considered but must document enrollment for licensure as Unified Media Specialist.
  • Recent preparation, or coursework, in contemporary methods and materials in the field of library science.
  • Ability to work with principals, classroom teachers, parents and students.
  • Willingness to do professional reading of research and attend meetings to stay current in library operations.

Responsibilities

  • Be directly responsible to the Principals.
  • Operates and supervises the school library.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library materials.
  • Assists teachers in selecting books and instructional materials, and makes them available to supplement instruction.
  • Informs teachers and staff about new library materials.
  • Maintains a cataloging system and teaches its use to teachers and students.
  • Arranges interlibrary loan of materials with focus on teacher needs.
  • Plans assignments likely to extend use of library resources.
  • Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
  • Helps students develop independent reference skills and use of reference materials.
  • Presents and discusses materials with classes on invitation of teachers.
  • Participates in curriculum meetings.
  • Arranges book displays and exhibits to interest patrons.
  • Prepares and administers the library budget.
  • Supervises library aides in duties.
  • Participates in library and educational associations at multiple levels.
  • Supervises clerical routines for smooth operation.

Education

Bachelor’s degree
Master’s degree preferred
Massachusetts licensure or in progress
Unified Media Specialist licensure (all grades)
Knowledge of library operations
Contemporary methods in library science
