Job summary

The YMCA seeks a Preschool Teacher Assistant to provide a safe, caring learning environment for preschoolers. Under supervision, you will support daily activities, supervise children, and assist with planning and safety, while upholding YMCA values and policies.

Responsibilities include helping with behavior management, communicating with parents, and participating in staff trainings to ensure high-quality care and a positive member experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of one year experience in a related field in a supervised setting.
• CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification required within 30 days.
• Proof of a negative TB test within the last 2 years.
• MAT certification preferred.
• Complete trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually.
• Background checks: Virginia State Police, criminal and CPS checks.

Responsibilities

• Support the YMCA mission and goals.
• Model professional behavior and YMCA values.
• Lead to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
• Assist the teacher with supervision and safety of preschool children.
• Maintain sight-and-sound supervision and know group size.
• Help plan and prepare daily activities for preschoolers.
• Assist in preparing and cleaning up supplies for activities.
• Participate in group activities including swimming, team-building, arts and crafts.
• Follow Virginia licensing standards and department guidelines.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Communicate with parents about children's needs and daily activities.
• Wear staff uniform or professional attire when appropriate.
• Participate in fundraising efforts (Annual Support, United Way).
• Act as a leader in emergencies and report incidents per plan.
• Ensure a safe environment following branch Emergency Operations Plan.
• Perform other related duties as needed.
