Job summary

Friends of the Children in San Diego seeks a dedicated mentor to serve as a positive adult role model for eight elementary students (K–5). The role emphasizes nurturing, protecting, and sustaining relationships, while teaching life and academic skills and partnering with families.

The position requires a minimum 40-hour schedule with afternoons/evenings and weekends, and a commitment of at least three years.

Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to develop trusting relationships with children, families, teachers and others involved in each child’s life.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain long-term, caring relationships with each child.
• Spend time with children one-on-one and with families.
• Provide support to parents/caregivers and coordinate resources.
• Teach life and academic skills and promote life-long learning.
• Document activities and participate in evaluations and reporting.
