Job summary

The Delaware County Office of the Public Defender provides legal representation to individuals in criminal, delinquency, and mental health proceedings. The Social Service Advocate, Juvenile Unit, works under Defender leadership to identify social service needs and coordinate supports for clients.

Responsibilities include coordinating with DHS, drafting psychosocial reports, liaising with attorneys, and facilitating client re-entry and probation transition.

Qualifications

• Master of Science in Social Work, Counseling, Criminal Justice, or related discipline preferred.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience working with people with serious mental illness and drug and alcohol issues preferred.
• Computer skills, including experience with case management software and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Identify and obtain appropriate forensic services based on the client’s needs.
• Coordinate services with Delaware County’s Department of Human Services and support diversion from criminal/j juvenile justice systems.
• Draft psychosocial reports and assist in communication between attorney and client; prepare correspondence and records for court.
• Establish relationships with community services and supports, including mental health, law enforcement, and educational services.
• Appear for court proceedings and monitor client progress.
• Assist with re-entry into the community and transition to probation.
• Collaborate with juvenile staff to address client needs and assist in data collection.
• Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.
