Job summary

The Water Project is seeking a Director of Finance & Operations to lead our financial and operational functions. You will manage day-to-day accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting while partnering with the President/CEO and Board to sustain programs and impact.

This role is based in Concord, NH, requiring about one day per week in the office. You will work with a mission-driven team to ensure strong controls, compliance, and thoughtful financial stewardship across the organization.

Qualifications

• Seven+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
• Nonprofit accounting experience including restricted funds, grants, and Form 990 support.
• Strong GAAP knowledge, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
• Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop and spreadsheets.
• Clear written and verbal communication for non-financial audiences.
• Ability to work from the Concord office about one day per week.

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary bookkeeper and maintain records in QuickBooks Desktop.
• Record donations, transfers, investments, and related commitments.
• Manage accounts payable, reimbursements, and vendor records.
• Oversee daily cash, bank accounts, and investment activity.
• Complete monthly close and reconcile accounts.
• Maintain chart of accounts and documentation for audits.
• Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecasts.
• Prepare monthly/quarterly financial reports for leadership and Board.
• Coordinate Form 990 and audit processes.
• Oversee payroll funding, HR payroll interfaces, and benefits finances.
