Job summary

Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD seeks a Histology/Immunohistochemistry Technician to perform routine and specialized IHC under supervision. The role includes specimen accessioning, embedding, cutting, staining, and digital imaging, plus send-out testing to reference labs.

Eligible for a $15,000 sign-on bonus with a 3-year commitment. Requirements include ASCP HT certification within 180 days or equivalent education, ASCP QIHC preferred, and 1–3 years histology experience.

Qualifications

• Associate’s transcript showing chemistry and biology coursework.
• Some college transcript showing 60 semester hours of credit.
• HT certification by ASCP within 180 days.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine histology techniques: accessioning, embedding, cutting, staining, labeling, and filing.
• Performs routine immunohistochemistry techniques: antibody handling, processing requests, and digital imaging.
• Performs specialized immunohistochemistry: validating protocols, troubleshooting staining.
• Performs immunohistochemistry and molecular send-out testing to reference labs.
• Maintains department compliance with federal regulations and quality standards.
• Assists Histology leadership with student teaching and QA/QI projects.

A Brief Overview

Performs specialized immunohistochemistry procedures under supervision of leader and Pathologist.

What you will do

• Performs routine histology techniques including, but not limited to: specimen accessioning, tissue embedding, cutting, staining, cover-slipping, labeling, and specimen filing.
• Performs routine immunohistochemistry techniques including, but not limited to: proper antibody and probe handling, processing immunohistochemistry requests, digital imaging of stained slides, and maintaining control slide inventory.
• Performs specialized immunohistochemistry techniques including, but not limited to: creating and validating new control blocks, validating new antibody and probe protocols, troubleshooting antibody and probe staining techniques.
• Performs specialized immunohistochemistry and molecular send out testing to reference laboratories.
• Remains up to date on standards and requirements to keep the immunohistochemistry department compliant with federal governing agencies and regulating bodies.
• Assists Histology leadership with student teaching.
• Assists Histologyleadership with quality assurance and continuous quality improvement projects.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

• Associate’s Transcript showing 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of chemistry and biology (must include credit hours in both) or
• Some College Transcript showing 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from an accredited college or university
• Histotechnician (HT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 180 Days

Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

• Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
• 1-3 years routine histology experience
