Job summary

San Joaquin College of Law’s New American Legal Clinic invites applications for a Staff Attorney focused on immigration removal defense. Under the Clinic Director, you will interview potential clients, analyze relief options, and prepare filings for USCIS and EOIR, representing clients before agencies.

The role requires J.D. and Bar membership, willingness to work nights/weekends, and travel across the Central Valley and to San Francisco/Los Angeles.

Qualifications

• J.D. and Bar membership required.
• Able to work nights and weekends, averages once a month, but up to two or three nights or weekend events within a two or three-week period.
• Valid driver’s license and must be able to travel within the Central Valley regularly, to detention facilities throughout California and to Immigration Court in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
• Intermediate to Advanced skills with Microsoft products
• Ability to keyboard 35-40 words per minute, advanced skills Microsoft products

Responsibilities

• Conduct interviews with potential clients and analyze their case for potential immigration relief.
• Prepare filings for USCIS and EOIR.
• Review immigration forms in a timely, attentive, and thorough manner and identify potential issues based on form review.
• Ensure files are organized and up to date; enter notes and case status in the case management system; watch deadlines for filing documents.
• Conduct thorough legal research and present complete analysis on immigration law; stay updated on changes.
• Attend trainings and report updates to NALC Director, staff and students.
• Attend in person administrative agency interviews and immigration court hearings.
• Travel to immigration court in San Francisco or Los Angeles to attend hearings as required.
• Travel to detention facilities to conduct client visitations and help prepare clients for hearings.
• Collaborate with administrative staff and law students; provide initial support and mentorship.
• Maintain discretion with confidential information and exhibit excellent customer service.
