Job summary

New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) – LegalHealth division is seeking a paralegal dedicated to immigrant rights. The role supports supervising attorneys at a large Medical-Legal Partnership, performing client intakes and assisting with asylum, family petitions, and other affirmative filings.

You will translate as needed, collaborate with hospital partners, and maintain a presence at the NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue clinic up to three days per week, reporting to an attorney supervisor.

Qualifications

  • 2-year or 4-year college degree or 2 years immigration work experience.
  • Ability to work independently, with a team, and directly with clients.
  • Capacity to handle a high case volume and interact with a diverse client population sensitively and professionally.
  • Excellent analytical skills to determine whether potential clients have relevant legal issues.
  • French language skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform direct client intakes for immigrant patients referred through the Primary Care Human Rights Clinic at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.
  • Assist attorneys with asylum applications, family petitions, adjustments of status, VAWA-based applications, naturalizations, green card replacements, TPS, U/T visas, requests for Deferred Action, and other affirmative filings.
  • Assist clients and attorneys with legal documents and advocacy.
  • Provide written and oral translations and other language support.
  • Maintain an in‑person presence at the legal clinic at NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue up to three days per week and meet hospital clearance requirements.

LegalHealth, a division of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), offers a paralegal opening committed to protecting immigrants’ rights in one of the largest Medical-Legal Partnerships in the country. LegalHealth partners with 38 hospitals to provide free legal services in medical facilities and train healthcare professionals to address legal issues tied to health. This position reports to a supervising attorney.
