Job description

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans ( CIANA ) is a social services organization that works to integrate new immigrants into the socioeconomic and civic life of American society while maintaining pride in their cultural heritage.

CIANA’s Immigration Legal Department is looking for a highly personable and detail-oriented self-starter to provide immigration legal services. This position is full-time and in person at our Astoria, Queens office.

Qualifications & Skills

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
• Passed the New York Bar Exam and is fully authorized to practice law in New York State
• Strong understanding of immigration law and procedures
• Proficiency in legal research; strong written communication skills; ability to analyze complex immigration issues
• Experience filing various forms of immigration relief
• Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines effectively, work in a fast-paced environment, adapt to frequent changes in law, and handle emotionally sensitive cases with empathy
• Bilingual in Spanish or other languages a plus

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct legal consultations/screenings, provide legal guidance on immigration laws, and determine relief needed
• Schedule and confirm new appointments, file applications and petitions for immigration relief, maintain caseload, and provide follow-up
• Perform legal research, draft complex legal briefs, and prepare/file other legal documents
• Monitor and learn about changes in immigration laws, regulations, and policies and advise clients accordingly
• Manage deadlines and document cases in CIANA database management system, maintain detailed case files, and perform other related administrative tasks
• Keep clients informed of their case status, communicate with other parties involved in the case, and accompany clients in court or at DHS interview
• Attend trainings and meetings with other organizations
