Job summary

Position Overview:

The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Statewide 9-1-1 is seeking a detail‑oriented and service‑focused Telecommunicator Trainee to join our team. The Telecommunicator Trainee participates in a six ‑ to twelve ‑ month training program to develop core skills in State Police telecommunications. The trainee learns communication protocols, FCC regulations, radio and teletype operations, and ISP computer systems through classroom instruction, demonstrations, and on ‑ the ‑ job training. Responsibilities include updating manuals, maintaining files, and entering operational data. The position also involves attending meetings and workshops to support development toward full telecommunicator proficiency. ISP encourages all those who qualify to apply!

Essential Functions
  • Under immediate supervision, participates in an agency sponsored training program for a period of six to twelve months in State Police telecommunications applications designed to develop familiarization with State Police telecommunication procedures and practices and the usage of two-way radio, teletype devices and computer equipment.
  • Receives on‑the‑job formal and/or informal orientation in training to acquaint the employee with the duties and responsibilities of the telecommunicator position and the interpretation of Illinois State Police (ISP) communications procedures, Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations, and the ISP computer system.
  • Attends classes, listens to instructors, observes visual demonstrations, takes notes, and studies course material.
  • Inserts updates into operational manuals. Maintains files, inputs arrests, warnings, and motorist assist documents into a centralized computer database.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and other activities which provide meaningful learning experiences.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a high school diploma earned from an accredited institution, a State of Illinois High School Diploma*, or reciprocal state educational attainment. * Public Act 102-1100: The State of Illinois High School Diploma (High School Equivalency).
  • Requires pre‑employment examination of job‑related skills.
  • Requires pre‑employment auditory memory assessment.
  • Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 20 WPM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience with keyboarding or computer typing.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience using basic computer systems or software.
  • Prefers at least three (3) months of experience with obtaining and providing information via a standard telephone or two‑way radio.
  • Prefers at least three (3) months of experience or coursework involving filing or organizing documents, either paper or electronic.
  • Prefers at least three (3) months of prior full‑time or part‑time job experience.
  • Prefers prior preparation of three (3) or more written documents (i.e. essays, research papers, notes, etc.) during school coursework or other training courses.
Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to pass an Illinois State Police background check and drug screening.
  • This position requires successful completion of the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) on‑line course and LEADS Full Access Certification Examination during the training period.
  • Requires a clear speaking voice.
  • Must be able to work assigned shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 20 WPM.
