Job summary

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with machining certificate from a reputable trade school preferred or demonstrated experience operating OD/ID grinding equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading, GD&T, precision measuring equipment, and grinding principles is required.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate OD and ID grinding machines following setup sheets and drawings.
  • Install and true workholding devices, grinding wheels, fixtures, and tooling for each production run.
  • Select, mount, balance, and dress grinding wheels based on material and finish specs.
  • Set machine speeds, feeds, and parameters to meet specs.
  • Grind OD/ID features while maintaining tolerances and finishes.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections with precision tools.
  • Record labor, production quantities, scrap, downtime, and inspection results.
  • Perform routine maintenance and report issues to maintenance.
  • Follow safety rules and 5S practices; participate in continuous improvement.

Operate manual and/or CNC Outside Diameter (OD) and Inside Diameter (ID) grinding equipment to produce precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, blueprint specifications, and shop floor documentation while maintaining quality standards and production schedules.

Education/Training

High School Diploma or GED with machining certificate from a reputable trade school preferred or demonstrated experience operating OD/ID grinding equipment in a manufacturing environment. Experience with precision grinding processes is preferred.

Special Skills

Employee must have thorough knowledge of blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), precision measuring equipment, and grinding principles. Must understand grinding wheel selection, wheel dressing, feeds and speeds, workholding methods, and machine setup. Experience maintaining close tolerances and fine surface finishes is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Follow setup sheets, engineering drawings, work instructions, and shop floor documentation to set up and operate OD and ID grinding machines.
  • Install and true workholding devices, grinding wheels, fixtures, centers, chucks, and tooling required for each production run.
  • Select, mount, balance, and dress grinding wheels based on material, dimensional requirements, and surface finish specifications.
  • Use hydraulic press to straighten shaft style parts as needed.
  • Set machine speeds, feeds, wheel offsets, and grinding parameters to produce parts that meet engineering specifications.
  • Grind outside diameters, inside diameters, shoulders, faces, tapers, and other precision features while maintaining required tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Verify the shop floor documentation and blueprint have the same revision level before beginning production.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, surface finish comparators, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Monitor grinding wheel wear and machine performance, making adjustments as necessary to maintain dimensional accuracy and maximize wheel life.
  • Complete work orders in the order specified by the supervisor or shop scheduling system.
  • Record labor, production quantities, scrap, downtime, and inspection results in the shop floor scheduling system.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance including machine cleaning, lubrication, coolant maintenance, grinding wheel replacement, and routine inspections.
  • Identify machine malfunctions, wheel defects, tooling issues, or quality concerns and report them to the Area Lead or Maintenance personnel.
  • Follow all safety requirements. Read, understand, and always follow job-specific JSA and work in a safe manner.
  • Sustain the 5S ratings of the work area.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and equipment performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, and manual handling of tooling, grinding wheels, and workpieces.
  • Frequent use of hands for machine setup, wheel changes, dressing operations, and precision measurements.
  • Ability to distinguish fine visual details necessary for inspecting surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and part quality.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machine noise, grinding dust, coolant, metal particles, and varying temperatures while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
