Grinding Machinist Role
The Grinding Machinist sets up and operates precision internal, external, rotary, and surface grinding equipment to produce high-tolerance parts according to engineering drawings and production schedules. This position ensures consistent part quality, maintains process documentation, and supports continuous improvement across shop operations.
Grinding Machinist Responsibilities
- Mount, true, dress, and balance abrasive wheels and set up workholding fixtures for ID/OD cylindrical grinding operations
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, job packets, and surface finish requirements
- Select appropriate grinding wheels based on material properties, tolerances, grit, grade, and bond specifications
- Set up workholding including magnetic chucks, collets, steady rests, and custom fixtures to maintain concentricity and taper requirements
- Run production to routed cycle times while monitoring for wheel loading, part burn, chatter, and size drift
- Edit FANUC control programs at the machine to correct offsets, infeed speeds, and spark-out timing
- Inspect in-process work using micrometers, air gauges, bore gauges, indicators, and surface finish instruments
- Create and maintain setup sheets, wheel specifications, and offset documentation for job repeatability
- Perform routine operator machine maintenance, manage coolant quality, and uphold 5S standards
- Cross-train on rotary and surface grinding equipment while adhering to strict abrasive wheel safety guidelines
Grinding Machinist Reporting Relationships
This position reports directly to the Machine Shop Supervisor and has no direct reports.
About You
- Possess strong experience setting up and operating internal and external (ID/OD) cylindrical grinders
- Demonstrate working knowledge of FANUC controls and program editing at the machine
- Proficient in reading blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and shop routings
- Skilled in using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, bore gauges, air gauges, and indicators
- Knowledgeable in selecting and dressing grinding wheels based on material type and surface finish callouts
- Experienced working with carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steel, bronze, and hardened materials
- Ability to set up complex workholding including steady rests, faceplates, and custom fixturing
- Exhibit a strong commitment to quality, process documentation, and initial part inspection

Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Ability to lift and handle parts, grinding wheels, chucks, and tooling weighing up to 35 lbs unassisted
- Ability to rig and maneuver heavier workpieces using overhead cranes (5-ton and 10-ton)
- Required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach throughout the shift in a industrial machine shop environment
- Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times, including safety glasses and steel-toe footwear
