Job summary

Bend Park and Recreation District is seeking an enthusiastic Ice Skating and Hockey Instructor to deliver safe, engaging youth and adult lessons in our community programs.

Two levels (Instructor 1 and Instructor 2) offer progression with leadership opportunities and a strong emphasis on safety, development, and teamwork. The positions are part-time and involve evenings and weekends, with wages listed per hour.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old and currently attending high school.
  • Knowledge of ice skating and hockey instruction fundamentals.
  • Ability to plan, organize and lead classes toward determined goals.
  • Excellent communication with participants, parents and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs and supervises participants in ice skating and hockey instructing programs.
  • Ensures safe use of facilities and reports vandalism/theft as needed.
  • Maintains records and forms related to the program.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
  • Sets up and breaks down equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
  • Communicates effectively with participants, parents and staff.
  • Participates in district-wide events and other duties as assigned.

About the job:

Ice Skating and Hockey Instructor 1s teach basic youth and adult instructional programs providing a safe, successful and fun learning experience for participants. Teach the progressive skills that are fundamental to the sport. Promote an environment consistent with program philosophies and goals.

Ice Skating and Hockey Instructor 2s teach all levels of progressive youth and adult instructional programs. The Ice Skate/Hockey Instructor 2 is distinguished from the Ice Skating/Hockey Instructor 1 by providing leadership, as well as the experience and ability to teach all class levels in our BPRD programming

A day in the life:
  • Instructs and supervises participants in ice skating and hockey instructing programs.
  • Ensures safe use of facilities. Maintains security of facility. Reports vandalism and theft.
  • Maintains all required records and forms.
  • Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
  • Set up and break down of equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
  • Communicates effectively with participants, parents and staff, providing accurate information related to work assignment.
  • Participates in district wide special events as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Expectations for Ice Skate/Hockey Instructor 2s:
  • Proficient in Instruction/Coaching Skills (for all Skate & Hockey Instructors);
  • Ability to mentor Skate Instructors 1 and/or volunteer coaches;
  • Provides leadership from within team when appropriate;

  • Skate Lessons (both hockey & figure): Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:15-6:30pm. Saturdays, 8:30-10:45am.
  • Youth Hockey: Mondays, 3:30-7:30pm. Wednesdays, 3:45-6:15pm. Saturdays, 8:45am-12:30pm.
  • Adult Hockey: Tuesdays, 8:15-11:30pm. Fridays, 8:00-10:45pm.
Requirements
What you’ll need for success:
Skate/Hockey Instructor 1

Strong Knowledge of:

  • Hockey or figure skating instruction including the fundamental skills of the sport;
  • Safety guidelines related to assignment;
  • Child development and age-appropriate learning and communication strategies;
  • Behavior and class management skills;

Skill and Ability to:

  • Plan, organize and lead classes toward determined goals;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with and motivate people of all ages and abilities, particularly children;
  • Exceptional ability to work cooperatively with others, follow through on directions and create a positive, respectful and constructive relationship with staff and the public.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties associated with this position.
Skate/Hockey Instructor 2

Strong Knowledge of:

  • Hockey or figure skating instruction and ability to teach independently;
  • Safety guidelines related to assignment;
  • Demonstrates initiative & exercises some independent decision making;
  • Child development and age appropriate learning and communication strategies;
  • Teaching methods, practices and progressions for a wide range abilities and ages.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Ice skate or play hockey at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Plan, organize and lead classes toward determined goals
  • Communicate effectively with and to motivate youth and adult of various ages and abilities
  • Lead and mentor newer instructors
  • Demonstrate strong technical competency in skills teaching
  • Physical ability to perform the duties
  • Work cooperatively with others and create a positive, respectful and constructive relationship with staff and the general public.
What we’re looking for:

Education, Experience, and Training:

Skate/Hockey Instructor 1 (starting wage $19.53- $22.26)
  1. Must be a minimum of 15 years of age; AND
  2. Currently attending high school; OR
  3. Must have knowledge of instruction fundamentals skills of ice skating/hockey.
Skate/Hockey Instructor 2 (starting wage $21.13- $24.09)
  1. Must be a minimum of 16 years of age; AND
  2. Currently attending high school; AND
  3. Some previous work, training/certification or volunteer experience related to ice hockey or ice skating; AND
  4. Ability to meet all BPRD skate/hockey instructor position skills and abilities; OR
  5. Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.

Preference

  1. Prior coaching, teaching or child development experience.

Certification:

First Aid/CPR - preferred

Supervision Exercised:

For Instructor 1s, supervision is not a responsibility of this position.

For Instructor 2s, supervision is not a responsibility of this position; however, provides guidance to Instructor 1 staff.

Supervision Received:

Work under the general supervision of Program Coordinator. Receive routine (daily/weekly) direction from Program Coordinator.

Working Conditions:

  • Work schedule and number of hours varies, and class assignments are based on programming needs and may require evenings, weekends and holidays. Hours vary depending upon specific program needs.
  • Continuous time commitment required for length of variable sessions;
  • Depending on program, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions.
  • The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.
  • Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling and kneeling in order to deliver equipment and supplies.
  • Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand.
