Department BSD ARC - IACUC/IBC

The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at the University of Chicago is dedicated to supporting investigators in conducting animal research while ensuring the humane and ethical care of all laboratory animals on campus. The IACUC/IBC unit oversees the review and administration of animal research protocols, ensuring investigators meet all institutional, regulatory, and compliance requirements associated with the conduct of animal research.

Job Summary

The job maintains regulatory compliance programs, including the interpretation of systems to identify areas of risk and may coordinate internal audits. With a moderate level of direction, participates in compliance documentation, compliance training, and compliance committee formation. The IACUC/IBC Sr. Analyst partners with investigators to navigate animal and biosafety protocol submission, ensuring regulatory standards are met, and supporting the committees that uphold the ethical conduct of research. Responsibilities include conducting administrative reviews, preparing committee meeting materials, coordinating facility inspections, supporting post-approval monitoring, and collaborating with University Research Administration. Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance to investigators in the preparation of animal and biosafety research protocols, receive and perform administrative review to ensure completeness of submission, verification of completion of training requirements, and verification of congruence with related grants.
  • Use the electronic Automated University Research Administration (AURA) system for IACUC and IBC reviews.
  • Ensure that biosafety protocols are completed appropriately and the necessary ancillary reviews (e.g., Office of Chemical Safety, Office of Radiation Safety) completed.
  • If biosafety protocols involve animals, ensure animal protocol is completed appropriately.
  • Prepare and conduct IACUC Semi-Annual Facility Inspections.
  • Work with University Research Administration (URA) on grants and contracts related to laboratory research that require Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) and Material Transfer Agreements (MTA).
  • Assist with Post-Approval Monitoring (PAM) including record reviews and procedural observations.
  • May assist with review and creation of training modules with ARC Compliance/Training Specialist.
  • Coordinates department or clinic compliance with a moderate level of guidance.
  • Plans and executes internal and external audits and activities to support regulatory agency inspections.
  • Prepares, completes and submits all compliance documentation on a routine basis.
  • Coordinates compliance committee meetings.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience: 3+ years of experience with biological research and animal research or animal care environment/setting.

Preferred Competencies
  • Proficiency and comfort with technology systems and software programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with a customer service orientation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal regulations and institutional policies.
Working Conditions

Comfortable with being at one's desk for most of the day, requires use of standard office equipment, remote or in person, requires walking around campus on occasion during semi-annual facility inspections.
