Instrumentation & Controls Programmer – Remote in the Midwest
Water & Wastewater Automation
Make an Impact Where It Matters
Are you passionate about automation and solving real-world process challenges? In this role, you’ll design and support PLC and HMI/SCADA systems that keep critical water and wastewater treatment facilities running safely and efficiently. Your work will directly impact communities by improving reliability, visibility, and regulatory compliance across essential infrastructure systems.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys both hands‑on programming and field involvement — and wants to see their automation solutions operating in the real world.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Program and enhance Allen-Bradley PLC systems (RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000) controlling pumps, aeration systems, filtration, chemical feed, and disinfection processes
- Design intuitive, operator-friendly HMI/SCADA applications using Ignition and other platforms, including real-time dashboards, alarms, and historical data trending
- Develop control strategies such as PID loops, sequencing logic, and safety interlocks to optimize plant performance
- Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and communication issues to keep operations running smoothly
- Integrate field instrumentation using protocols like Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP
- Partner with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to turn process needs into practical automation solutions
- Participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT) for new systems and upgrades
- Support SCADA administration tasks including user access, backups, and database coordination
What We’re Looking For
- 1–5 years of hands‑on PLC/HMI programming experience in an industrial environment
- Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix platforms
- Exposure to HMI/SCADA systems such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View, Wonderware, or VT SCADA
- Understanding of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, OPC, MQTT)
- Ability to read P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop diagrams
- Water/wastewater or municipal utility experience is a plus — but strong industrial automation experience is highly valued
Bonus Points For:
- Ignition certification
- ISA CAP or CCST certification
- SQL or scripting experience (Python or similar)
What You Can Expect
- A mix of office-based development and hands‑on fieldwork
- Exposure to full project lifecycles — from design and programming through commissioning
- Opportunities for professional growth, vendor training, and industry certifications
- The chance to work on systems that serve communities and protect public health
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary: $85,000–$120,000, based on experience
- Comprehensive benefits package (health insurance, 401(k) with employer match, PTO, paid holidays)
- Company-wide discretionary bonus program
- Ongoing professional development and continuing education support
