Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in Safford, AZ, seeks a Diagnostic Mechanic II with strong mechanical maintenance experience to perform routine and complex repairs on process equipment including pumps, conveyors and dryers.

The candidate should demonstrate welding skills and a solid grasp of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical systems, while following MSHA/OSHA rules and safety procedures. Training and growth opportunities available.

Qualifications

  • Four years of experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and pass written assessments where required.
  • Proficient basic welding skills (FPM/HEM/SDHEM) and ability to operate cranes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance with increasing complexity.
  • Complete Work Orders and document maintenance activities.
  • Repair, install, fabricate, rebuild, troubleshoot, and maintain process equipment (pumps, conveyors, dryers, gearboxes, filters).
  • Apply knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, welding, bearings, metallurgy, conveyors, plumbing, alignment, blueprints, and machinery.
  • Follow MSHA/OSHA rules, SOPs, and safety/environmental procedures; participate in safety activities.
  • Assist in training of maintenance staff.

Where You Will Work

In operation since 2007, Safford operations is a zero-discharge facility and one of the most sustainable mines in the United States. The operation’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies and sustainable practices strongly emphasizes safety and environmental stewardship. Located in southeastern Arizona, close to more than 4 million acres of national forest, employees and their families can connect with the great outdoors while fishing, rafting, hiking and more. Several educational institutions also are nearby, including a Northern Arizona University satellite campus, Eastern Arizona College, and the Gila Institute for Technology.

What You Will Do
  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance activities with increased complexity.
  • Complete Work Orders, order parts, and other maintenance documentation
  • Ability to repair, install, fabricate, rebuild, troubleshoot and preventative maintenance of process equipment i.e. pumps, conveyors, dryers, gearboxes, filters, etc. Capable of performing equipment lubrication.
  • Competent in mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, welding, bearings, basic metallurgy (stress cracking, metal compatibility), conveyor systems, plumbing, alignment, machine shop, blueprints, schematics, and mobile equipment. Qualified to operate small and large cranes and knowledgeable of safe rigging practices.
  • Follow and understand MSHA and/or OSHA rules and regulations, Environmental rules and regulations, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and work area instructions, participates in safety and environmental activities, uses plant and equipment correctly at all times.
  • Assist in training of employees in the mechanical maintenance area.
  • Additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned according to business need.
What You Bring To Freeport
  • Four (4) years’ experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (including welder, boilermaker, machinist or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required mechanical aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on technical skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge, as well as safety.
  • FPM Diagnostic Mechanic II:75% FLEX score required; Must be able to demonstrate proficient basic welding skills.
  • HEM Diagnostic Mechanic II:Practical Assessments defined in LOP; Complete first 34 classes in CAT-Uortested out with HEM FLEX Assessment.
  • Shovel/Drill Diagnostic Mechanic II:Practical Assessments defined in LOP; Completed 52 coursesortested out with SDHEM Flex Assessment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED

The estimated pay range for this role is currently$32.00 - $44.00/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
